hawai'i is my happy place - donut downloadables!
Happy National Donut Day!
Obviously donuts are a HUGE part of living my best life, so much so that a few years ago I got a donut tattoo permanently inked on my left wrist! Not sure what it is about this particular dessert-snack (whatever you want to call it!) that makes me so happy... maybe the endless number of flavors shops come up with, or just fun, colorful sprinklers. Either way, I prefer donuts over cake, ice cream, pie, or candy any day :).
This year, for National Donut Day, we stopped by California Donutsin Los Angeles to celebrate this fun holiday! Our production office is local to Los Angeles so we love popping over the California Donuts for a sweet treat every now and then. You can customize your donut letters however you like with different topping and icing colors... just be sure to place your order well in advance to give their team enough time to accommodate your requests!
Speaking of favorite donut spots, we put together a list of some of our favorite donut shops from the three cities we call home: Honolulu, Los Angeles & Portland. We haven't tried every donut shop in these cities (YET!) but have a look and let us know what your favorite spots are!
Best Donut Spots - Hawai'i (Oahu)
These guys are nuuuuts lol! And we mean that in the best way possible. Check um out if you're into exploring crazy, fun flavors. I don't even like cake donuts but Purvé does it right, and their team that works in the shop are so nice!
Not your traditional "hole in the middle"donuts but a donut nonetheless! Leonards Malasadas are insanely delicious and unforgettable. Enjoy them FRESH and HOT. Get yourself a small pink box of these next time you are on Kapahulu Avenue! They also have a small food truck in Hawai'i Kai and (last time I checked) Waikele!
Two words, three syllables: POI DONUTS. This is our go-to spot specifically for that flavor because, oh man.. it's mind blowing.
Work in downtown and need a break from the office? Mr. Donuts is the place! My sister Yasmin used to live in Chinatown and told me about this place! It's our go to spot when we need to pick up a few dozen donuts for the office or a photoshoot. Their donuts are classic, and melt-in-your-mouth simple which is what makes them so great!
Best Donut Spots - Los Angeles
Clearly the most unique donut spot in Los Angeles! CA Donuts has been our go to spot for YEARS because they have everything from a classic chocolate glazed donut to crazy flavors and designs like unicorn, animal circus cookies and every classic cereal you can possibly image. This is where you can get your custom donut letters from as well.. just remember to order them at least one week in advance!
We'll be honest.. these donuts are EXPENSIVE lol! But, you can tell this place uses incredibly fresh ingredients so their donuts are bursting with flavor in every bite. This place is on the west side in Santa Monica, which is a bit of a drive for us, but when we are in the area we make sure to hit this place up!
Hands down our favorite donut spot on the west side! We hit up Primo's Donuts for their classic blueberry donuts whenever we are on this side of town. CAREFUL! They sell out quick! So hit this place up early morning for the bet selection.
This is place donuts on steroids lol. We came here a few times when we were in the Highland Park area and holy moley, these guys take donuts next level! Every time we come we opt for their custom donut ice cream sandwich: choose your donut flavor which they cut in half in order to place your choice of ice cream in between! Top it off with whipped cream, chocolate sauce and sprinkles and you got yourself a donut sundae!
Best Donut Spots - Portland, Oregon
Pips Original Doughnuts & Chai
After a delicious meal at Por Que No? Taqueria in Hawthorne, we head over to Pips for about a dozen of their delicious, fresh mini doughnuts. We aren't lying when we say that every single one of their flavors are to die for! We pair them with their delicious house-made chai! BEST. MEAL. EVER.
Well hello there fresh, melt-in-your-mouth beignets and lemon poppyseed donut perfection! We hit up their Lake Oswego location all the time, but you can also find them in downtown Portland in the pearl district!
